History
Dating all the way back to the 1850s, gold miners would fly down the mountains on 15-foot long skis at nearly 100 miles per hour. This was the fastest way to travel from certain areas. Inevitably, organized ski racing became a sought out luxury for those who could travel the distance for a world class ski trip. These large ski towns became some of the biggest slopes in North America. In 1924, Lake Tahoe’s very first ski resort, the Tahoe Taven, was opened to accommodate visitors in Tahoe City. Shortly after in 1930, locals in the reno area began to ski what is now known as Mt. Rose Ski Resort. As the popularity in the area began to skyrocket, Squaw Valley had the unique opportunity to host the very first televised Olympic game in history. In 1960, the 8th Winter Olympics was held in our very own backyard! This was not only a historic moment for the iconic Squaw Valley but it was an exciting experience for the whole world. Still, to this day, there is a unique presence that resonates throughout the towns that surround Lake Tahoe!
